There are many ways a hymen can be disrupted or injured — through some physical activities, sports, sexual intercourse, sexual assault, or trauma. We also treat women who were born without a hymen or would like their hymens restored for cultural or religious reasons. Hymenoplasty is able to restore the natural tissue that separates the upper and lower regions of the vagina. Dr. Huertas performs hymenoplasty as an outpatient procedure in a hospital or accredited surgical center where he has medical privileges. As for anesthesia, Dr. Huertas may recommend light sedation, like IV sedation or a local anesthetic. A hymenoplasty is not a lengthy procedure and may take under an hour to finish. He will stitch the hymen with dissolvable stitches to cover a portion of your vaginal opening. In the event that there is insufficient tissue in place to reconstruct the hymen, then Dr. Huertas can reconstruct your hymen from the lining of your vagina, which will make the procedure take longer. Dr. Huertas can determine the type of hymenoplasty you'd require after doing a pelvic exam during your consultation. 

Once the procedure is complete, patients can recover at home. Most patients can resume normal, everyday activities a few days after surgery. Sexual activity should be avoided for at least 6 weeks. You can expect some bruising, swelling, and discomfort around the surgical area. We ask that you follow all of our post-operation instructions to limit the risk of infection.

After the procedure, most patients will be able to recover at home with post-operative care instructions. Patients may have mild discomfort that can typically be treated with oral pain medication. Most patients return to work and light activity within 1 - 2 days. Heavy lifting and exercise, especially running and jogging, should be avoided for the first four weeks. Patients should not engage in sexual activity for at least 6 weeks following the procedure to allow proper healing. 

After a successful hymenoplasty and recovery period, the hymen will tear and bleed during a woman’s next vaginal penetration. The stitches will dissolve over time and the incision scar will not be visible..
